Hamad's Story

Working with Pastoralists

Hamad FARM-Africa approached Hamad’s community to discuss the possibility of settling permanently and using the River Awash to irrigate the land and grow crops as an alternative livelihood. This would give them protection against drought in the future.

FARM-Africa hired a tractor and bought two oxen to help Hamad’s group plough the land. We also provided agricultural training, tools and seeds like maize, onion, pepper, carrots, cabbage and lettuce. A canal was built to the river to channel water to the fields and two pumps were installed to draw the water.

For Hamad, the project has not only provided a vital source of food for his family, but now he can also sell crops and use the income to pay for healthcare for his family and livestock.
