Joyce's Story

Joyce has high hopes for her goats

Joyce At 62 years old, Joyce should be looking forward to retirement. But, with two grandchildren to care for and three acres of land to farm, the work goes on for widow Joyce.

Joyce was one of the first people to receive two local goats as part of a FARM-Africa Dairy Goat Project in her region. We gave the community male Toggenburg goats, which they have cross-bred with local goats to increase the milk yield of the resulting kids.

The kids are still only small at the moment but Joyce is keen to see what next year brings. We know from our experience in other areas that increased milk yields benefit children’s health, and selling any excess will help to pay for food, healthcare, education and improvements to their houses. In the meantime, Joyce sells her goat manure for up to £1.50 a sack.

Most of all, she wants her grandchildren to get an education and hopes the goats can help to put them through school and get good jobs.
