Worke's Story

Security, with help from FARM-Africa

Worke Worke used to live in fear of drought. If her animals died and her crops failed, she and her five children would have had to rely on food aid to survive.

So when FARM-Africa came to her village, she jumped at the chance to get involved and formed an irrigation group with her neighbours. With FARM-Africa’s help they built a canal to the local river to channel water to the fields and installed two pumps to draw the water. Worke received a starter kit of seeds and went on to harvest almost £400 worth of maize! She now grows onions, tomatoes and peppers to sell.

Worke also took a loan from FARM-Africa and opened a small shop selling everyday items like soap, salt and razor blades. It proved so successful that she soon paid off the entire loan with interest.

Thanks to the income from her shop and vegetables, four of Worke’s children now attend high school and her eldest son has completed school and become a journalist in a local town.

Best of all, Worke finally feels secure.

“Before, we staggered along on one foot. Since FARM-Africa we can stand on our own two feet.”
