Worknesh's Story

A roof over Worknesh’s head

Worknesh Worknesh and her husband have a small plot of land where they grow maize and insett, but it isn't large enough to feed them and their three children. The FARM-Africa poultry project in Chilimo, Ethiopia, gave her 25 chickens to assist her with a business that could feed her family and also provide an income. With advice from FARM-Africa, she developed a diet of maize, wheat and sorghum for the chickens to maximise egg-laying. Worknesh has sold five cockerels for an average of 20 birr (c £1.30). This has meant she could buy materials to help her make improvements to her house.

She also cross-breeds the chickens with local varieties to produce tougher chickens and sells their eggs. She plans to use this income to pay for school materials for her children.
