Marietta lives with her husband and three children on the edge of the Nou Forest in Tanzania. For generations, villagers there have been collecting wood from the forest, which they burnt to make charcoal to sell. But this is not a sustainable way to live.

FARM-Africa provided beehives and training in beekeeping to Marietta and her community. Our special hives are cheap to build and easy to maintain. They are also made from bamboo, which grows quickly and regenerates itself.
The honey supplements Marietta’s diet. She also sells it for a good price at the market, as it is not only a popular foodstuff, but is also used for treating burns, ulcers, and coughs and colds. In addition, because bees naturally cross-pollinate as they collect nectar, they also help to increase yields from the crops that Marietta plants.
